Minix Neo X7 as an Ubuntu server

I'm planning to install lbuntu and run subsonic and airvideo server from the device. Anyone currently doing something like this who can comment on the performance?

I'd prefer not to run the Linux distribution from micro SD and instead use the internal HD.

My reason to do this;
-Minix neo x7 has un-patched stage fright vulnerability
-I need an new server.

I'd prefer not to run the Linux distribution from micro SD and instead use the internal HD.

My reason to do this;
-Minix neo x7 has un-patched stage fright vulnerabilities (and the developers over at the official minix forums have confirmed to me that Rockxhip will not be issuing a patch.)
-I need an new server.

I figure the device still has good hardware, it's just insecure, so I can perhaps use it as a sever and use my apple tv as a client for airvideo server on Minix box.

Review of the MXV+, the successor of the famous MXiii

$

0
Greetings to all of you ,

About a year ago the MXiii made it's first baby steps in the Android TV Box market and managed to be the most famous of all due to it's very good specs and low price

After that the MXiii-G followed, the MXIV and the MXV

Well a new player is in town, it's called the MXV+ and it brings some very nice design changes but does it have what it takes to successfully continue the MXiii legacy?

Let's test this baby and find out

In the Box
The device comes in a medium sized package indicating that it has a 64-bit CPU and supports 4k video playback

Opening the box we find
  • The MXV+ itself
  • The IR Remote Controller
  • A very nice HDMI Cable
  • The A/C Adapter rated at 5V 2A
  • A User Manual

Looks & Ports

The device feels great in the hand and it's light but the plastiscs could be of better quality although still not bad

The top plate is made from aluminium with a brushed metal feel and the MXV+ logo printed on it

On the front we see the notification window which also displays a digital clock

On the right side we have the MicroSD Card Slot and the Reset Hole

On the left side we have nothing

On the back we have the remaining ports which are 3 USB 2.0 ports, the HDMI output, the Ethernet port, an SPDIF optical audio output and the DC input

And if we flip it upside down we see the rubber pads and a lot of ventilation grills which is good

Software
The MXV+ comes with a proprietary preinstalled launcher and although it looks beautiful it doesn't give you access to the bottom task bar meaning that you can only multitask if you have a keyboard connected and press alt+tab, i tried using other launchers like Nova Launcher but the same thing was happening

Anyways the stock launcher looks great, it consists of Windows like tiles for Online Video, Recommended Apps, Music, Local ,Settings and an App Drawer and is very friendly to use with the included IR Remote

At the bottom bar you can add your most used apps in order to access them with ease and at the top we see our connection status and the date & time

If we go into the settings we can see that the box is running Android 5.1.1 which explains why the interface is so good looking

The Google Play Store is also available for you to download your favourite apps

Browsing is good on this device as well as watching Youtube Videos up to 4k but don't be overexcited because even though it packs a very good 64 bit Quad Core Amlogic S905 CPU it only has 1 GB of Ram memory making the MXV+ rather slow when it comes to running multiple apps at the same time

Hardware and Benchmarks
As i mentioned earlier and according to CPU-Z the device's specs are
  • A Quad Core 64 bit Amlogic S905 CPU running at 2 Ghz
  • A Mali-450 GPU
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 8 GB Internal Storage
  • WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • HDMI 2.0

I ran some benchmarks to show you the device's performance and got these scores

The scores were not so great and i wasn't impressed with the real life performance either but for the price it's acceptable

The good thing is that the MXV+ wasn't even warm to the touch during the tests which means that it has excellent heat dissipation

WiFi Reception

I was a bit disappointed from the WiFi reception because although my net speed is at constant 47 Mbps and my router was practically next to the MXV+, when i ran a Speedtest i only got 7-8 Mbps

I believe that this happens due to the fact that the top part of the MXV+ is made of metal and limits the WiFi reception

If you use it with an ethernet connection though you will never have a problem

Kodi & Video Playback

Kodi comes preinstalled and the test videos i tried ran very good except from a 120 Mbps 1080p video which stuttered during gameplay and 2 H.265 videos which could't run on Kodi but ran great with no problems at all using the built in video player

I also ran a Video Benchmark for you to see how the MXV+ playbacks other video formats as well and it did pretty good

Gaming

I tried to play some games with an external Xbox 360 Wired Gamepad but i couldn't get it to work.

The only way to have a good gaming experience on this device is by using the Moonlight App and stream the games from your PC to the MXV+ but with the low WiFi speeds this device has i don't know if it would be possible

Conclusion
I personally wasn't very impressed with the MXV+ as a poweruser but for those who want to use it exclusively as a kodi media player and do light tasks like browsing the internet and watching youtube videos it is good enough

Don't rely on it's WiFi connection though because it is slow and you will have to use ethernet to have descent internet speeds

All in all in my eyes it is not a worthy successor to the MXiii legacy and i will have to wait more to find something worth upgrading

Pros
  • 3 USB 2.0 Ports
  • Good Video Playback
  • Great heat dissipation
  • Preinstalled Kodi
  • Great H.265 Video Playback using the default Video Player
  • 64 bit CPU
  • Digital Clock
  • Build Quality
  • Design
  • Price
Cons
  • Not so good WiFi reception
  • 1 GB RAM
  • Real Life performance could be better
  • No support for USB gamepads

Android/p201/p201:5.1.1/LMY47V/20160305:user/test-keys is the version my MXQ Pro 4K came with some time ago.
Meanwhile I run OpenELEC. But: does anyone know where to find the original 20160305 firmware
(in case, one day, I want to revert back to Android, say, to give away the box to someone else)? Thanks!
I saved (with dd) boot bootloader logo recovery and system partitions. But I guess it may be a bad idea and perhaps not sufficient to dd them back from a running OE.

Hi,

I am a noob when it comes to these TV boxes.
I really hate the remote it comes with because many aspects of the navigation works better with touch. I tried using the Android TV remote app on my phone but it will not see my TV Box even though they are on the same WiFi. Has anyone been able to use any remote app with these types of boxes.

Here is the info on my TV Box

Realtek's new SoC promises to shake things up on the Mini PC market - and you can read all about the SoC and the devices using it right here
The newest device using RTD1295DD will be coming from Eweat, young company that worked with Realtek last year (RTD1195) item as well.
Eweat R9 will be one of the three Eweat models using RTD1295, we'll update this article when details about the other models will surface.
For now we know that Eweat R9 will be middle one. There will be a smaller version without SATA and a third model that will feature an internal HDD bay and an external SATA port for further storage expansion.

Back to Eweat R9, the model will use the same slick aluminum case we've seen on previous Eweat models and will come with two HDMI ports - in and out - and an external SATA port

HELP! OTT TV Box S905 4K - missing recovery mode

Hi all,
Play Store in the original firmware did not work so I had to flashed it with another ROM.

Now I cannot not get into the Recovery Mode using the tooth-pick method (>30 sec press). It went straight into the Android main menu. It looks like the box lost this function after I managed to flash it with the Geekbuying firmware for this MXQ Pro box. The box seems to be working OK with a few quirks but it lost the ability to get into the Recovery mode.

Is there a way to restore the Recovery mode?

The original ROM: "ro.build.description=p201-userdebug 5.1.1 MXQ-Pro 20160413 test-keys <=== need to download this ROM. Does anyone know where it is?
Board version: MXQ_S905_V2_0_2015112

I have not found an older or newer ROM that worked 100% with it. Does any know where I can get this ROM as it was overwritten?

Thanks.

I need root access to shield (to be able to use SuperSU)
I would prefer to not need to login to Google to setup a box.
Will never need to access Play Store or Shield store

Do I need a custom ROM for this? If so, anyone want a quick bit of side work?

Need Current M8 img file for USB tool

I managed to salvage 4 out of 7 DOA Amlogic M8's using the USB method and an " *.img " file (which uses a different *.img file than the SD card method)!

Only problem is I cant find a current M8 " *.img " file (about 700+/- mb approx) with Kodi 15.2 and/or up! The M8's open up with a "Google TV" logo and have KODI 14.0!

Also as it stands the IR remote doesn't work, but a wired remote will!

Can anyone point me in the right direction for the latest M8 *.img file? thanks.

I have rescued two M8's and two M8N's!

thanks pclpatop

PiPO X9 (DUAL OS) - Software Upgrade Package (with Manual)

$

hi there,

i'm fully shutup, me has collected the software from x9 and translate the pdf's, there is real no support for this device (also there is more than one version, one clicks at the audio port for example and has screenshare onboard)

Instructions:

Upgrade-Flash-Manual:

###REQUIRED

///FILES:

1. go to download location: (see below)
2. download "PiPO_x9_Software_Package_02-05-2016.rar"
3. copy the content in a empty directory

###SYSTEM

///BIOS:

1. run the X9 in windows OS (normal boot will work)
2. copy the content of the X9_PiPO-BIOS.rar to the Machine while in windows OS.
3. run FlashWin32.BAT with admistrative rights

###DUALBOOTOS

///Android:

1. put the files from the Android- *8G or *16G.rar packages on a usbstick (depends on the NAND size of your device)
2. boot the x9 while holding usb-keyboard-F7, choose the uefi-shell, start up.
3. it will run automated the startup.nsh from the stick and reinstall android while repartitioning the emmc.
4. when ready, deattach the usb stick, ready
(the rom is rooted, you can install now your busybox and superuser binarys)

///Windows 10 Home:

1. copy the content of Windows10*.rar onto a usbstick or microsd with a usb cardreader
2. run the x9 in android
3. plugin the usb drive
4. swipe the upper right corner, select "switch os"
5. -if insyde bootmanager shows windows -> select
-if no bootmanager comes up, hold down f7, select uefi shell with windows filesystem (or the name of your stick).
-if androids starts up anyways -> hold down f7 while boot -> select "enter setup", go to the last tab, choose your usb drive in the lower part of the screen and boot.
6. x9 setup will run an automated installation script.

###DRIVER ((note that the drivers from the package are not real need to install, cause of they are os-image implented)))

///Windows Driver:

1. copy the content of X9-Driver.rar in an empty folder.
2. go to \YOURFOLDER\X9 drivers\MRD7-Win10-PVC-WW29.5\MRD7-Win10-PVC-WW29.5\Installer\PlatformInstaller/
3. run Setup.exe , will install the drivers

///UART Driver:

1. copy the content of X9-Driver.rar in an empty folder.
2. go to \YOURFOLDER\X9 drivers\JAPANESESIGNS\
3. hold down shift and right click the directory with japanese signs, choose "start command line from here"
4. to silent install/reinstall use: install /i /q
(5. to uninstall use: install /u /q

///USB to ETH Driver:

1. copy the content of X9-Driver.rar in an empty folder.
2. go to \YOURFOLDER\X9 drivers\MiNi_PC_DM96xx_Driver\

1. copy the content of X9-Driver.rar in an empty folder.
2. go to \YOURFOLDER\X9 drivers\kxaccel-1.0.29.4-x86-autosfx
3. run dpinst.exe or right click "kxfusion.inf", choose "install" wait till driver is installed

###BOOT

///BootManager:

1. copy the content of InsydeQ2S.rar into an empty folder
2. try yourself, its not nescessary to install it manually, android installs it already.

///BootKeys:

Firmware Bios: hit "DEL" or "ESC" at first PiPO screen
Boot Options: hold down "F7" at boot
Android w/o Insyde Bootloader: Power up and hold down "Vol Up" till the second pipo screen starts up Android

///Bootloader/Recovery:

disable Insyde bootmanager: uncheck upper left corner in the OS-choose screen (but dont know how to activate it again)
boot into recovery: start a terminal (like Terminal Emulator from Playstore) in android and type:

su
reboot -recovery

or install a reboot manager from the playstore

###Hints

1. there is no custom recovery for the x9 pipo for backup the table,
choose "online nand backup" (playstore) to backup without installed recovery via clockworkmod or twrp backup scripts
use "nand manager" (playstore) to recover.
2. microphone is working with an external usb soundcard, via usb host apps but not in SN-apps (android).
3. internal microphone may be on the generic audio-port, but is only usable via headset. (android)
4. internal generic microsd card reader is a joke, try to cache it up in android.
5. usb webcams also working with usb host app. (android)
6. usb 2.0 hubs are instable or overused (doesnt recognize cams or soundcards sometimes, or cuts the usb IR-Keyboard when display shuts down) (android)
7. usb 3.0 drivers are installed in windows, but there is not port for it, may be the internal port for the ethernet.
8. usb soundcards/reader/keyboards are working 100% in windows

MXQ Pro loading problems, won't turn on, stuck on mbox screen

$

Just got the MWQ Pro last week. It worked great for about 2 days, then I started having issues. It began to freeze here and there but worked fine after being unplugged and plugged back in. After one of those times all my kodi addons were gone. A day later I was watching a show and the bottom and right side of the picture was off screen. I messed around with the video settings a bit, zooming out and moving the image over a few times. Then the system froze again, so I unplugged it and plugged it back in, but this time it wouldn't load past the 'mbox' logo. Remote wont do anything, I did the toothpick trick, put the latest firmware on a usb and tried flashing it onto the box (im a bit of a noob so i might not have done it properly), unplugged/replugged a million times, still wont go past mbox logo. I emailed the amazon store i ordered it from and they suggested unplugging it and plugging it back in, so no help there. Anyone else have this issue?

MXQ Red light of doom?

I recently purchased an MXQ box and was trying to install OpenELEC. Everything was going fine until my box didn't boot back up. Won't turn on even when I reset. There is a right light inside so I know it is working somewhat. I'm wondering if the box is bricked or if I can fix it or whatnot? I'm usually pretty handy with computers and fixing these things but right now I'm completely lost. Any help would be totally appreciated seeing as I've only used it once and it would be a waste of $50 if it is ruined.
